100 years later: The Big Burn revisited

We only know them as Mr. and Mrs. Swaine, but their story endures – 100 years after the largest firestorm in recorded U.S.history came within a few feet of incinerating tiny Mullan, Idaho, and everyone huddled outside its homes and shopfronts.

On Aug. 22, 1910, Mr. Swaine took pen in hand and began writing, retelling the [...]

In case you don’t, former University of Montana football coach Bobby Hauck made national headlines last fall when he refused to talk with reporters from the campus newspaper, the [...]

On the Web, and the road, with Griz Nation

The Missoulian has two reporters and two photographers on the road this week with the University of Montana football team. That’s a big commitment for a small newsroom, but one we know is important to our readers and community.

What’s fun about going on the road with the Griz – I’ve had the opportunity twice over [...]

When Texans come to town

The SFA football team also did a shirtless afternoon walk-through at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. TOM BAUER/Missoulian

Today’s edition of “seen in the newsroom” would more accurately be called “seen from the newsroom.”

The entire northern wall of our newsroom is a window looking out over the Clark Fork River and downtown Missoula, giving us a lovely – [...]

Coming attractions: big Grizzlies, good chemicals, awesome tailgate parties

In between the turkey and trimmings, Missoulian reporters and photographers have produced an incredible lineup for this weekend’s newspapers.
The planning, in fact, goes back about six weeks. Long years of experience have taught us to plan ahead – way ahead! – for holiday weeks.
And while there is still always that last-minute rush of stories and [...]
