Big voices, tender ages

Two incredible young women grace the cover of Friday’s Entertainer. Their stories will make you feel good. Theirs are the kind of stories we love sharing with Missoulian readers.

Both young women are singers. Both have voices and talent far beyond their years.

Joe Nickell’s profiles will introduce you to Kira Means, the winner of Missoula’s First Night Idol Competition this year. She’s wowed virtually every professional musician in Missoula with her voice and songwriting skills. But she’s also incredibly humble, and not at all interested in winning more contests. She in it, she says, for the music.

Then you’ll meet Emily Peragine, a budding opera singer who played the very challenging role of Amahl in Montana Lyric Opera’s production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” Emily is presenting a concert Friday night at Hellgate High School so she can earn money to travel to auditions next month at three of the most prestigious music schools in the country.

I hope you’ll pick up Friday’s Missoulian and read about these beautiful, smart, articulate – and yes, big-voiced – young women. I’m honored that we can share their stories with you. I’m honored to be in their audience.
