It rained like cats and dogs: MPR reaches goal

Congratulations to our colleagues at Montana Public Radio, who raised a record $591,000 during their spring fundraising drive – which ended Sunday with the ever-popular, ever-rambunctious “Pet Wars.” (My church always donates money in honor of our mostly legendary “church mouse.”)

Here’s the good news, as provided by Montana Public Radio and the University of Montana:

Attention, high school seniors. The Missoulian is looking for eye-catching artwork to feature on the cover and inside of its June 4 graduation special section.

All entries meeting the following requirements will be considered, and the artist selected for the cover will receive $50.

The artist must be a graduating senior at a western Montana high school [...]

Is this your prom photo?

We are honored to have been chosen as the backdrop for three couples’ pre-prom photo last night, as two Missoula high schools held their spring formals.

A reader e-mailed us this photo taken on the lawn in front of our building as the couples headed to dinner.

Problem is, they didn’t send along the cutline info – [...]

Uncover Missoula 2011: We need your help!

One of our biggest community service projects of the year – our Uncover Missoula publication – is under way.

That’s the Missoulian’s booklet that provides local residents with a variety of information about Missoula, including nonprofits, clubs, health resources, schools and more.

I know lots of folks who keep it with their essential references all year through [...]

Why I love Missoula: Superheroes of Kindness

Superhero Hayden Bosshardt bestows a homemade flower on Flor-Haven resident Jennifer Deutsch. “It’s lovely. Thank you,” said Deutsch, which is the only reward a superhero needs. Photo by MICHAEL GALLACHER/Missoulian

In editing stories for Sunday’s newspaper this afternoon, I came across a quote from a gentleman – the subject of our Sunday Territory feature – [...]

2011 Montana Legislature: Tuna vs. lions

It is the eve of the 2011 Montana Legislature, and here in the Missoulian newsroom we are ready for another epic “Lion vs. Tuna” session. A Democratic governor. A newly elected Republican majority in the House and Senate. Loads of freshman legislators. Loads of hot-button issues.

Thus, the video clip above, with thanks to first-time legislator [...]

Inside Tuesday’s Missoulian: a grocery bag to fill for our neighbors in need

On Tuesday, the Missoulian will help the Missoula Food Bank kick off its holiday food drive by including a grocery bag with each edition of our newspaper.

We’ve provided this service for years, and are happy to do so – albeit sorry that the need continues.

In fact, were we to truly show the need as this [...]

Happy Thanksgiving, and a song!

Happy Thanksgiving to all our families, friends and neighbors here in western Montana and beyond! All of us at the Missoulian wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday.

I just finished shoveling the loveliest inch or so of fresh powder off the sidewalk. And yes, I’m thankful today for the snow and cold – [...]

Missoulian’s ‘We Care for the Holidays’ outreach begins

On Thanksgiving Day, the Missoulian will embark upon our annual “We Care for the Holidays” campaign – an effort to connect western Montanans in need with their neighbors who have enough to share.

Each day until Christmas Eve, we will feature an area nonprofit group and individuals served by the group who have wants and needs [...]

Feed the hungry and Montana Public Radio

Our friends at Montana Public Radio have come up with a great way to help themselves while also helping our neighbors in need.

This coming week, starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday, KUFM will launch a three-day, on-air membership drive – with a twist.

Rather than the thousands of “premiums” offered donors during the radio station’s spring fundraiser, [...]
