This bear really fell for downtown Missoula

A black bear falls into the waiting net of its rescuers after being tranquilized outside an apartment building on East Broadway. KURT WILSON/Missoulian

Congratulations to Missoulian photography editor Kurt Wilson, who reminded us all today of what it takes to come back to the newsroom with great spot news photography: hustle (getting to the right [...]

Reporter uses Twitter to tell outside world he's alive

We’ve thought we were pretty clever about finding new uses for Twitter, here in the Missoulian newsroom.

But we will never be as clever – or as heroic – as the Japanese journalist who tricked his captors in Afghanistan and used Twitter to let the outside world know he was alive.

Here’s the Associated Press story on [...]

Michael Jamison to leave Missoulian

This week, our newsroom bids farewell to a treasured longtime reporter, Michael Jamison, who for 15 years has covered Glacier National Park, Flathead and Lincoln counties, and everything in-between for the Missoulian.

Michael has accepted a position with the National Parks Conservation Association, a nonprofit whose mission it is to protect and enhance America’s national parks.

He [...]

Campaign 2010: Let the games begin!

It’s Labor Day, and that means the “official” – or at least the traditional – start of the fall campaign season. And while much has been made about Montana’s lack of fiery statewide races this year, there are dozens of very significant local races.

Control of the 2011 Montana Legislature will be decided in each and [...]

Sniffing out the news!

Here’s one of the things I’ve loved about hanging around newspapers all my working life: the smell of a new edition of the paper coming off the press.

Now, thanks to a Missoula couple, I can log that pleasant inky aroma on a global map of smelly places. And on Sunday, thanks to reporter Keila Szpaller, [...]

Jill Valley’s very public story

We honor a colleague, KPAX-TV news anchor Jill Valley, today with a thoughtful and wonderfully written story by reporter Michael Moore. It is Jill’s story, though, and she does the telling. About breast cancer. And courage. About the unstoppable force that is our desire, as human beings, to keep on living.

There are many Jills in [...]

You can help: MCPS needs writing mentors

For years now, I’ve been a fan of Missoula County Public Schools’ literacy army – a group of Missoula professionals who work one-on-one with high school students on their writing skills.

The Missoulian newsroom has been a longtime supporter of the program, starting with former reporter Mea Andrews, and continuing with reporter Michael Moore, city editor [...]

Missoulian, Ravalli Republic merge newsrooms

We set off on a new and exciting venture Monday, with the merger of the Missoulian and Ravalli Republic newsrooms.

That means we now have one combined reporting force covering all of western Montana – from Whitefish to Darby – and that’s great news for all our print and online readers.

Both newsrooms are staffed with incredible [...]

Rush Limbaugh’s pants are on fire

At least once a week, I get a call from a reader asking why we haven’t published a “news story” they’ve heard on Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly.

In every case, I check into the request and give the reader a call back. In every case, at least so far, my response has [...]

Western Montana’s high school football season kicked off in fine style Friday night, and we’ve got lots of new and [...]
