On crossing the finish line

Missoulian reporter Tristan Scott, former assistant news editor Jenn Sauer, news editor Justin Grigg

All sorts of incredible, and sometimes bizarre and sometimes hilarious, things motivated runners in Sunday’s Missoula Marathon and Half-Marathon.

My daughter loved the Chuck Norris jokes posted on signs along the route.

Neither she nor I realized those were the handiwork of Jenn [...]

Indy: Missoulian reporters are Missoula's best!

The Missoula Independent hit newsstands today with its annual “Best of Missoula” edition.

My favorite section: the media!

Because? Missoulian reporters Michael Moore and Tristan Scott won!

And because the Independent made some very nice comments about not only Moore and Scott but the entire Missoulian newsroom.

And I quote:

“We may engage in a little competitive rivalry with [...]

Why I love the Missoula Marathon

It’s Marathon Week in Missoula and here in the Missoulian newsroom we’re ready to run.

You’ll remember that a team of folks from our newsroom won the marathon relay event last year. And we’ve got newsies and newsie children running the full and half-marathons this year, too.

News editor Justin Grigg and cops and courts reporter Tristan [...]

For Melissa, Erika, Sonny and Brian

Wendy Martin, girlfriend of Sonny Kless, pilot of the plane, is consoled by Kless’ brother Dustin Haines after a rescue helicopter returned to the command post with no survivors Wednesday afternoon. Family members and friends of the four victims had arrived at the National Bison Range to help search for the missing plane. The [...]

Looking like Missoula, and loving it

Western tanager. Photograph by MICHAEL GALLACHER

Years ago, I was at a journalism workshop where the keynote speaker talked about the importance of a local newspaper looking and sounding like its community.

I remind myself of that imperative every day.

“What does it look and sound and feel like to live in Missoula – in western Montana [...]

Coming Sunday: Fun on the farm!

The Sunday Missoulian is a huge undertaking for every department at the newspaper.

In the newsroom, it’s one many weeks in the making.

Every Tuesday, we meet as a group of reporters, photographers and editors to talk about the weeks and months ahead. The conversation always includes Sunday stories and story/photo packages many weeks out.

Recently, we started [...]

All hail UM’s Class of 2010!

They are among my favorite stories of any year: the Missoulian’s profiles of graduating seniors at the University of Montana.

And this year’s edition, a tribute to the Class of 2010, begins Wednesday on the front page of the newspaper.

These are not [...]

Coming Sunday: The last season

Jack Hooker works with one of his young horses at the Whitetail Ranch’s indoor arena. MICHAEL GALLACHER/Missoulian

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of spending even a few hours at Jack and Karen Hooker’s Whitetail Ranch, you know there is no lovelier, more well-tended ranch in Montana.

Just outside Ovando, the ranch commands sweeping views of [...]

Coming Sunday: Vintage tractors

My son’s first two-syllable word was “tractor.” He watched them, hour after hour, at our home in Moscow, Idaho, where we lived surrounded by in-town wheat fields. He begged us to take him to the John Deere dealership and the Latah County Fair, where he would spend hours admiring all the [...]

Tristan, Michael and Jamie are Missoula's choices

Congratulations to the Missoulian’s own Tristan Scott, voted the city’s best print reporter in the 2010 Missoula’s Choice balloting.

Tristan covers cops and courts for the Missoulian, and started work in our newsroom as a summer intern. 2009 was a stellar year for Tristan, who was the only journalist who covered the W.R. Grace criminal trial [...]
